What efflorescence is
Efflorescence is a light-colored mineral deposit that can appear when soluble salts move with moisture through masonry and crystallize at or near the surface. On pavers it may look like a white haze, powder, bloom or uneven lightening.
Not every white paver is efflorescence
Jacksonville homeowners often describe any white or cloudy appearance as efflorescence, but similar symptoms can come from trapped moisture beneath sealer, coating blush, polymeric-sand haze, hard-water minerals, irrigation residue, cleaner residue or deteriorated film. Applying an efflorescence cleaner to the wrong problem can waste time or damage the finish.
How HydroSeal evaluates white pavers
- Review when the whitening appeared—before or after sealing.
- Inspect whether the deposit sits on the surface or appears within a coating.
- Consider drainage, irrigation, shade and moisture history.
- Identify the existing sealer where possible.
- Use a controlled test area when chemical restoration is being considered.
Efflorescence removal before sealing
Where actual efflorescence is present, the surface may require an appropriate cleaning process, thorough rinsing and adequate drying before sealing. Sealing over unresolved mineral deposits can lock the appearance into the finished surface.
Can efflorescence come back?
Yes. Removal addresses deposits that are present; it does not guarantee that future moisture movement or soluble salts will stop. New pavers can also release salts as materials cure and weather. Drainage and recurring moisture conditions matter.
When stripping is the real solution
If the white appearance is inside a failed or incompatible film-forming sealer, surface cleaning alone may not correct it. The coating may require stripping or another restoration process after compatibility and feasibility testing.
